Employer Sponsored Visas
Employer sponsored visas allow businesses in Australia to sponsor skilled workers who have recognized qualifications and skills in particular occupations required in Australia. The requirements are:
- The applicant’s occupation must be on any of the occupation lists such as MLTSSL, STSOL or RL.
- The applicant must possess the ability to perform the task and
- The applicant may need to experience a formal skill assessment.
There are a wide range of business sponsored visa subclasses, and the criteria for each of them are diverse in different ways. The most widely recognized employer sponsored visa subclasses are:
- Subclass: 482 – Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (2-4 years).
- Subclass: 186 – Employer Nomination Scheme; (Permanent Residency)
- Subclass: 494 – Skilled Employer Sponsored (provisional)
- Subclass: 407 – Training Visa
Subclass 482 – Temporary Skill Shortage Visa
This visa is designed for Australian Employers so that they can address temporary labor shortage by hiring offshore skilled people. That said, in order to obtain this visa, one must be sponsored by a genuine Australian Business entity. The applicant has to work in the same nominated occupation with the same employer. This visa has three streams which are:
- Short Term Stream
- Medium Term Stream, and
- Labour Agreement Stream
The first one is offered for 2 years while the latter two are offered for 4 years. Upon successful completion of the visa tenure a candidate will be eligible to apply permanent visas like subclass 186 and 187
Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186)
The Employer Nomination Scheme visa (Subclass 186) is for skilled workers who want to work in Australia permanently. This visa involves a two-step process. First, nomination by an approved Australian employer and then an application under the nominated stream. It is part of the Permanent Employer Sponsored Visa program.
Skilled Employer Sponsored Visa (Subclass 494)
This is a replacement of the previous RSMS (subclass 187) visa. It has come into effect from 16 November 2019. This visa is for skilled workers who want to work in regional Australia. First, the Regional Certifying Body will ensure that the position is genuine and, in many cases, require the position to be advertised. Second, the nomination needs to be approved for an Australian employer in that particular regional area and finally meet the criteria for the visa application.
Australian Training Visa (Subclass 407)
Training visa is also a type of employer sponsored visa in that you must be nominated by an employer who is going to train you. The employer cannot be a single individual or a sole proprietor. To be eligible you will need:
- Relevant study or work experience
- English proficiency
- An occupation listed in one of the skills lists.
- Nomination by employer
- Health insurance in Australia
